Dear Colleagues,
2024 is the 80th year since the founding of the colonial institutions — the World Bank and IMF. Isn’t it high time to resurrect the “50 years is enough” campaign?!
Couldn’t this be a galvanizing issue for many organizations in the Global South and Global North? Perhaps led by those in the Global South, but a broad coalition that is global. I am writing some contacts I’ve made over the years (and a few others) with the hope that you will distribute this far and wide to see if it has some traction.
Wouldn’t the World Social Forum in Nepal in February be the perfect place to launch it?
Couldn’t this campaign really galvanize global attention to alternatives, large and small, to capitalism and other structures? Perhaps we could plan for a global conference to formulate alternatives? Perhaps even hold it at Bretton Woods? Perhaps left-wing philanthropists would fund the effort? Perhaps even some heads of State would sign on like Lula or the Prime Minister of Barbados? Couldn’t this be a galvanizing issue to bring together critics, think tanks, grassroots organizations, social movements, etc. from both the Global South and Global North? And it could generate lots of attention globally, perhaps begin a global movement!
