Announcements of technological breakthroughs seem to arrive daily, but rarely do we hear about an innovation as potentially significant as the “dual carbon” battery. Its developer, the Power Japan Plus company, claims that these new batteries can recharge 20 times faster than common lithium-ion batteries at a comparable price. This feature would be a boon, in particular, to the performance of electric vehicles, which could recharge in minutes rather than hours. “Dual carbon” batteries would purportedly have other advantages, as well: they would not easily catch fire or overheat, they would use no rare earth minerals, they could be charged and discharged repeatedly without losing energy capacity, and they could be made with simple recyclable organic cotton fibers. If these claims are confirmed, then these batteries, storing renewable electricity, could help propel the transition to a sustainable economy.
