Add climate advocacy to Pope Francis’s expanding portfolio of social activism. Building toward the critical climate change negotiations in Paris at the end of 2015, the Vatican has announced plans for an encyclical on climate and human ecology, a papal address to the UN General Assembly, and a climate summit of the world’s major religions. His climate initiative builds on the active presence of Catholic bishops at the recently concluded Lima climate negotiations, and more broadly, his calls for radical changes in the economic system to address human and environmental impoverishment. The Pope’s pronouncements underscore the moral urgency, as well as bio-physical, of addressing climate change, and challenge all religious leaders to apply their moral authority to build popular awareness and political will at this pivotal moment for the planet’s future.
