Over the past two months, climate change has been on the ballot. The results have been mixed. In Spain, the Socialist Party saw success by aggressively campaigning on a Green New Deal, avoiding the decline of their counterpart parties (“Pasokification”) throughout the European continent. In the European Parliament elections, building on the wave of climate strikes and other activism, the Green Party won a record number of seats, helped by surging numbers in Germany. However, the outlook was grim in Australia, where voters decided to double down on climate denial and keep the country’s ardently pro-coal government in power (coal baron sponsored fake news and fear-mongering about cost impacts apparently made the difference). In electoral contests to come, only a robust global movement can beat big money and ensure a vote for climate action before it’s too late.
