A disastrous pandemic is spreading, but so, too, is something hopeful: the movement for racial justice. The killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis at the end of May sparked demonstrations in cities and towns across the US and abroad, often led by youth. Protesters in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and South America stood in solidarity with those demanding radical change to policing in the US, while calling for action against systemic racism in their own countries. A palpable sense of shared grievance and united struggle is rising. Beyond policy demands, the movement is challenging narratives of national identity. Most visibly, the toppling of statues of slaveholders in the US and Europe has forced an essential reckoning with the past. This movement is clearing a path for the march to a more humanistic, inclusive world.
