After Syria signed on to the Paris Agreement, the United States is now the only country opposing the landmark accord. Although, given UN rules, the leader of this G1, Donald Trump, must wait until November 2020 to officially withdraw, he acts as if it’s already a done deal. Earlier this month, for instance, the US and China signed $100 billion worth in natural gas deals, and US representatives at the Bonn round of climate negotiations aggressively promoted the agenda of fossil fuel interests. US non-compliance and sabotage notwithstanding, other countries must go above and beyond their own pledges, which even if fulfilled will not keep warming below 2 degrees Celsius. But will they, and fact-based US states and communities, rise to the occasion? With global emissions again increasing, they better—and fast.
