John Martin Gillroy

John Martin Gillroy is Professor of International Relations and Public International Law and Founding Director of the Graduate Programs in Environmental Policy Design at Lehigh University. His research involves creating alternatives to the market paradigm and cost-benefit methods and the use of R.G. Collingwood’s Philosophical Method as a prerequisite for scientific method. Arguing that law and policy are built from the essential dialectic relations of ideas and institutions, he advocates for studying the essential logic of concepts underneath the superficial logic of investigation that characterizes conventional policy analysis. He operationalizes this approach through a procedure he calls Philosophical-Policy & Legal Design. He is the author of the recent book An Evolutionary Paradigm for International Law Philosophical Method, David Hume, and the Essence of Sovereignty and the editor of the book series Philosophy, Public Policy And Transnational Law.
