“Will the Trump Tariffs accelerate the transition to a post-consumer society?” | Maurie Cohen

Maurie Cohen, “Will the Trump Tariffs accelerate the transition to a post-consumer society?,” Sustainability: Science, Practice and Policy 21, no. 1 (2025).

Excerpt: “As consumer society withers due to burdensome taxation, a critical question for social scientists is: What are the contours of a putative post-consumer society? This is challenging to answer, and the notion of “post-consumerism” seems to suggest an indeterminate twilight period. By relying on such half-measured terminology, are we not postponing the thinking required to anticipate what will replace the contemporary societal system predicated on mass consumption? However, the lack of formal and agreed frameworks does not mean that we are bereft of resources to begin to appreciate the current moment.”
